Prior to WWII, there had been no lung cancer among Dine’. However, the mining sites and poor ventilation, coupled with a uranium tailings pile that was 70 feet high and a mile-long airborne blowoff, cause airborne radioactive particles to float through the area. At the time, mining companies are under no legal obligation to clean up their uranium mines. When the Dine’ request cleanup, the companies declare bankruptcy and leave the cleanup to the government.
